PLAZAMEDIA produces for new Basketball Champions League

Since October 2016, PLAZAMEDIA has been producing all home games of the German teams in the newly formed Basketball Champions League (BCL) as host broadcaster. The production company uses eight cameras per game, including two remote cams and also provides fully redundant SNG (Satellite News Gathering) for transmission via satellite. The group stage of the BCL – which includes 21 home games for the German teams FRANKFURT SKYLINERS, EWE Baskets Oldenburg and MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg – began on 18 October 2016, with PLAZAMEDIA’s first production the following day at the first German home game between Ludwigsburg and Partizan Belgrade. The client is FIBA Media, a joint venture between the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) and the sports media company Perform Group, a leading media group in the field of digital sports content. FIBA Media is responsible for the production and distribution of the Basketball Champions League as well as all FIBA’s continental and world championships. If the German teams are successful, PLAZAMEDIA’s contract will extend to their home games in the subsequent rounds of the tournament. PLAZAMEDIA is responsible for creating three signals altogether: World feed with integrated graphics World feed without graphics Isolated feed of the main camera angle with integrated graphics The Basketball Champions League was formed by FIBA and the ten leading European basketball leagues. PLAZAMEDIA goes remote: Remote production of “Der Volkswagen Doppelpass” for SPORT1

Right now there’s hardly a more talked-about topic in the production industry than innovative remote solutions. While in many quarters they’re still discussing the potential of this form of production, PLAZAMEDIA is already offering its clients not just studio and OB-unit productions but also concrete solutions for remote productions. Since the end of August these have been used in live operation for every production of SPORT1’s Sunday talk format “Der Volkswagen Doppelpass”. Following an intensive trial phase, an IP-based transmission method was chosen, with redundant signal transmission and failsafe transfer of control information. The streams and network components are controlled and monitored via a separate graphical user interface and the integration of a popular broadcast control system allows more flexibility in the implementation. For live and remote production, the set of “Der Volkswagen Doppelpass” in the Hilton Munich Airport was linked up to the PLAZAMEDIA broadcast centre in Ismaning via a redundant carrier line with the highest service reliability. The two lines with a guaranteed data transfer rate of twice 10Gbit/s are loaded with different bandwidths and data packages to best optimise the factors low latency, redundancy and quality. While with the classic OB-unit production there are sometimes natural space limits for equipment and applications, with the remote linkup to its broadcast centre in Ismaning, PLAZAMEDIA can integrate all kinds of resources and value-added services directly into the production. So the parallel transmission of multiple signals into the broadcast centre allows, among other things, extended archiving and highlight creation. With “Der Volkswagen Doppelpass” the benefits already became apparent in the first few broadcasts: Multiple direct connections from the control... read more

Pictures from the heart of Paris went around the world: PLAZAMEDIA set up media centre for UEFA EURO 2016™ in fan zone on Champ de Mars

Right in the heart of Paris a large central fan zone for UEFA EURO 2016™ on the grassy Champ de Mars accommodated some 100,000 people and formed one of the most striking backdrops for this major sporting event in France. In the middle of this hotspot with its impressive views of the Parisian skyline, the Eiffel Tower and the cheering football fans in the fan zone, a media centre comprising 52 containers spread over 800 m2 provided space for technology, studios and offices for TV broadcasters from all over the world. This so-called media base was planned, built and operated by PLAZAMEDIA in cooperation with UEFA and the city of Paris in the fan zone run by Lagardère Sports. The complex large-scale project included four studios, which PLAZAMEDIA leased to the broadcasters BBC, SVT, Globosat and ORF. There were also stand-up positions, which were allocated via a partnership with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) to numerous international broadcasting organisations, including from the USA and China. The infrastructure provided by PLAZAMEDIA enabled, for example, the BBC to use augmented reality in its leased studio and SVT to work with remote production solutions for its broadcasts to Stockholm. The positioning of the media base on the Champ de Mars allowed the broadcasters to capture the unique atmosphere of the Paris fan zone and use it as a backdrop for their transmissions. Over 2,000 hours of live programming were broadcast from the media base. At peak times there, up to 200 people from PLAZAMEDIA and its clients were deployed simultaneously, guaranteeing technical operation around the clock. Including planning and implementation, the project... read more
